Straight Talk About The Reserve Officers' Training Corps Program At UMASS Dartmouth.

What is ROTC?

Army ROTC is an institutional development program that prepares students to become qualified officers in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard.

What does ROTC offer YOU ?
Regardless of your job in the Army or the civilian sector, you will generally be viewed as a proven leader/manager, and mature than your peers. Our program offers multiple experiences in:

  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Confidence
  • Management
  • Self Discipline
  • Physical Fitness
  • Teamwork
These are valued character traits instilled and developed in each of our students. Therefore, our Officer Canditates are more attractive prospects to employers in the corporate world. Additionally, you may qualify for a 4,3,2 year Army ROTC Scholarship that covers:

UP TO $16,000 per year towards Tuition
100% of required Military Science Scholastic Fees
$510.00 per year for Books and Supplies
$200.00 per month of School Enrollment for Living Expenses.

Applications for the four-year scholarship are taken each summer and fall, during the student's senior year in high school.

Applications for the three and two year scholarships are taken from January until March of the student's freshman and sophomore years in College.

What is Expected from You ?
NO OBLIGATION
is incurred by simply taking Military Science (MS)101, 102L, 201, 202

NO OBLIGATION
to the Army occurs for attending Basic Camp

NO OBLIGATION
is involved in the process of applying for a scholarship; you may win a scholarship and then decline to accept it, thus incurring no obligation

YOU ARE A COLLEGE STUDENT FIRST
, we want you to do the best you can academically, as well as in Military Science Classes. However, at the begining of your junior year, you must decide whether or not to continue into the Advanced Course. If so, you are required to take one 3-credit course(and its accompanying lab) per semester. You must also attend physical training sessions and participate in two Field Training Exercises (FTX) per semester. You must also attend a five-week camp at Fort Lewis, WA, during the summer between your junior and senior year.

Active Duty Myth
ROTC is no longer a medium for developing only active duty officers. In today's Reserve Officer's Training Corp's, many officers choose to serve in the Army Reserve or National Guard. As an Officer in either of these components, you will normally train one weekend per month and two weeks during the year(usually the summer).

Upon Graduation
You will be eligible to receive a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, Army Reserve, or the Army National Guard.

How do you become an Army ROTC cadet?
There are three basic paths that you can follow to become eligible and enroll in the Advanced Course:

1.
The traditional approach - Complete MS 101, 102L, 201, 202 (Military History) during freshman and sophomore years. There is no obligation at this point. The classes are worth three college credits.

2. Attend "Camp Challenge": Those students who do not complete the Basic Course during their freshman and sophomore years may attend Basic Camp. Basic Camp is a five-week program conducted at the end of your sophomore year. Here you are able to compete for a two-year scholarship as you learn about the Army.

3.
Prior Service: You may be eligible if you have completed prior service in any of the Armed Forces, or you are currently a member of the National Guard or Army Reserve and have attended Basic Training.

UMASS DARTMOUTH - A CROSS ENROLLED SCHOOL
UMASS Dartmouth, does not have ROTC on campus. Students who wish to participate may do so by cross enrolling at Providence College. There will be no fee for Military Science courses taken at Providence College as long as the student remains a full time student at UMASS Dartmouth. The Patriot Batallion, which includes: Providence College, Johnson & Wales University, UMASS Dartmouth, Brown University, Community College of Rhode Island, and Rhode ISland College, is one of the most prestigious officer development programs in the nation.
