Frederick Douglass Unity House

About Us

The Frederick Douglass Unity House (FDUH) was created in the Fall of 1995, as part of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s efforts to acknowledge the unique circumstances of its increasingly diverse student body. FDUH, also known as Unity House, provides a supportive environment for the academic, cultural, recreational and social pursuits of the UMass Dartmouth students of color. It is a co-curricular center where activities and initiatives are designed that challenge, foster, and enrich the cultural life of the UMassD community.

FDUH is a place of cultural exchange, offering a variety of student and community oriented programs on cultural diversity, pluralism, leadership, development, political ideologies, social responsibility, and cultural traditions. With a growing collection of texts on African, Asian, Latino, and Native American cultural traditions FDUH is a place for research, study, dialogue and academic success. The student lead study groups provide a peer learning alternative to the classroom. Its computer lab, television viewing room, browsing and conference areas make for a comfortable environment for academic, recreational and social occasions.

The Unity House continues the legacy of Frederick Douglass, through its participation in the: Collegiate Invitational Leadership Summit on Race Politics and the Economy, the Annual Martin Luther King Breakfast, and the student chapter of the Society Organized Against Racism (SOAR). The Unity House, it's a caring community at UMass Dartmouth. Come visit us!
