School Supply Drive for Haiti

The Haitian American Student Association (HASA) at UMass Dartmouth is organizing a school supply drive for Haiti. In the year 2004, a devastating hurricane tore down one of the best cities of Haiti, Gonaives. Since then, Haitian citizens living in that city have been struggling to make a living. Parents cannot send their children to school because tuition is expensive, and school supplies are unaffordable. HASA is working with an orphanage known as Mission of Life in Gonaives. HASA's plan is to gather school supplies and cashdonation to send to send to the orphans. HASA is collecting cash donations, pens, notebooks, pencils, crayons, big packs, calculators, rulers, sharpeners and any other material related to school. HASA believes that helping these Haitian children will give them hope, and the feeling that they are not alone or forgotten. Your donation would mean a lot in the process, and those children will be thankful.

What is needed: We are collecting notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, sharpeners, rulers, crayons, backpacks, socks, sneakers, and related school supplies. We plan to ship these materials to Haiti in the middle of August. Cash donation is appreciated. We are working with an orphanage called Mission of Life situated in Gonaives, which is working on the reconstruction of the village. The orphan children living in the city will receive the supplies and be able to go to school at the beginning of the September. Some of them have already missed an entire school year due to the lack of school supplies and financial support.

How to Help: Boxes are being placed in convenient locations all over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus to collect these supplies. We also accept cash donation if this is what you can contribute. Students and faculty members are welcomed to help either through advertisements, donate supplies as described above, or help us collect supplies. Please contact Myriam Jeannis (u_mjeannis@umassd.edu) if you wish to make any cash donations. Your contributions or participation will be greatly appreciated, and your generosity will help make a difference in the lives of the children who wish to go to school this coming Fall.

Haitian American Students' Association Sponsorship

Program

The Haitian American Student Association is a group on campus. Our goal is to let people know about Haitian culture and help our country to move toward development. Children are the Hope of tomorrow. Helping Haitian children is helping in the process of Haiti development.

In 2004, a hurricane destroyed the city of Gonaives, situated in the north of Haiti. Many people died, and many disappeared. This hurricane caused great devastation, including countless loss of homes and schools.

As a result, many Haitian children were left orphans on the streets of Gonaives. Many of them still these days can not afford to go to school, because Haiti does not have a free education system. These kids are obligated to go on the streets to beg and wipe down cars to survive.

During the spring of 2006, The Haitian American Student Association at UMass Dartmouth organized a school supply drive for children in Gonaives, Haiti.  Because of the support HASA received from the UMass Dartmouth community, HASA was able to give out school supply to sixty students and two scholarships to two students. Although, the school supply drive project was successful, there are still more kids in need of education.

HASA wants to help these students. This year HASA has opened a sponsorship program. By giving only $10 a month, a sponsor will enable one more child to go to school. This money will be spent to pay for books and tuition fees. Your help play a huge role in this project, which is why we are asking you to please help a child. Help Haiti. In return for your sponsorship, you will be receiving letters, progress reports and pictures every three months.

The school supply project and the sponsor a child program are on-going. You can drop any donation to the boxes located in these places: Campus Center, the Writing & Reading Center, the Science &Engineering Center, and the Math & Business Center. Any new or used supplies in good condition will be accepted.

N.B: Supplies needed include notebooks, pens, pencils, backpacks, shoes, sneakers, highlighters, binders, etc. Any cash donation can be sent to the address listed below.

To sponsor a child, just click on the link below to download the application.

Bringing a smile to the face of these children is changing the face of Haiti.
