General
Information:
What is the
Freshmen Orientation all about?
Orientation is designed to ease you through the many 'firsts' which entering
college represents. Through various workshops, presentations, and small group
discussions, we hope to make the beginning of your college career an exciting
and successful experience. By the time you leave campus, you will know
a great deal more about the University, and more importantly, you will have
developed important friendships for the coming school year.
Where
do I check in?
Plan to arrive at 8:00 a.m. on your first day of the scheduled program.
Park in lots 4, 5, or 6. Check-in will begin in the Residence Halls Area.
Please be sure to eat breakfast before arriving. Your first meal on campus
will be lunch. You will be ready to leave campus by 4:00 p.m. on the second
day.
Am
I allowed to leave the campus during the Freshmen Orientation? Students
are required to attend the entire program and must reside on campus throughout
the program, regardless if they will be commuter students or resident students.
Events are planned for the entire duration of the orientation program, which
lasts for two days.
What
will the Freshmen Orientation cost?
The standard freshman orientation fee will be on your tuition bill which will
be mailed later this summer. This is a one-time, non-waivable fee.
What
should I bring with me?
Orientation is designed as an informal and enjoyable time. You should
bring casual clothes, your questions, and a good sense of humor. You should
also bring the completed survey which was mailed to you. For your residence
hall stay, bring a sleeping bag, pillow, extra long twin sheets, blankets, toothpaste,
toothbrush, shampoo, soap, towel, hairdryer, alarm clock and writing materials.
What
should I wear?
Bring casual, comfortable clothing for orientation.
Should
I bring my health papers?
UMass Dartmouth requires that all students complete a health questionnaire and
immunization form. To facilitate record-keeping and to insure your compliance
with this requirement, we suggest you bring the completed health forms to the
Health Office (located in Phase 3A) during orientation.
Will
I register during Freshmen Orientation?
The Registrar's Office and selected faculty advisors have spent a great deal
of time preregistering you for the Fall 2003 semester. During orientation,
your advisor will discuss your course selection, degree requirements, and help
you plan for academic success. At the end of your advising session, you
will have confirmed your class schedule for the Fall semester.
How
can I finance my education?
Financial aid in the form of student employment, grants, scholarships, and loans
may be available for the Fall semester. If you are interested in applying
for financial assistance, contact the Financial Aid Office at (508) 999-8632
for more information or click here to visit their web site.
Are
my parents invited to Orientation?
A packet of information will be mailed home to your family inviting them to
participate in the Orientation program. The Family Orientation program will
occur on the first day of your orientation and runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This program is designed to answer questions they may have and to acquaint them
with the various programs and services available to you and your family. During
your family’s visit at the University, they will have an opportunity to meet
members of the University administration, faculty and staff, along with attending
a number of workshops describing Umass Dartmouth and its unique community. To
help defray the cost of the Family Orientation program, there is a charge of
$15.00 per person . This fee applies to all guests attending Umass Dartmouth
Family Orientation. The $15.00 per person fee covers the cost of all program
features including printed materials, breakfast, lunch and an international
coffee hour with the Deans of Colleges. In addition, on-campus parking privileges
and the use of the facilities are also included in this cost.
Is
the campus accessible to the physically disabled?
If you are a student with a disability and need special assistance (note takers,
readers, mobility assistance, etc.), please contact the Office of Disabled Student
Services at (508) 999-8711. They can help answer any questions you might
have regarding your participation in orientation. Special dietary needs
(i.e. diabetes) should be communicated to the Orientation Office at (508) 910-6497.
Please let us know of your dietary needs so we can make the necessary arrangements
prior to your arrival.
