"Always take the opportunity to meet someone new."
In the summer of 2011, I traveled to Ghana, West Africa, with Professor Royal Hartigan to study the drumming, dance, and song of the Asante people. Apart from the incredible music experience, this trip opened my eyes to different walks of life and different ways of thinking. It's very humbling to see and meet people who will never have access to the same comforts and privileges that I have (as a westerner), but nonetheless are beautiful, open, and caring individuals.
Think critically, and don't blindly accept what is taught to you; indoctrination often masquerades as education. The will to power is a driving force in all people—being aware of it helps you to understand how people act.
Networking is a long-term process that can be fun and easy. Always take the opportunity to meet someone new. Kindling these friendships over time will take you in new directions and give you new opportunities.
I've been accepted by Florida State University College of Music to pursue a Master of Music degree—and earned a teaching assistantship and a full scholarship to go there.
I would like to thank my parents, Daphne and Ed, who have given me so many opportunities and so much support. They are tireless and selfless in the support of their children.
