Student Spotlights

English as a second language support at UMass Dartmouth

Raquel's main struggle has been the language barrier. Although Raquel considers herself a self-sufficient person who likes to "figure things out on her own," there are many support systems on campus for students who learn English as a second language such as programs, workshops, and conversation partners held at the Writing and Reading Center.

In addition, Raquel's professors have been very helpful and accommodating to her needs as a student whose native language is Portuguese. For example, Professor Andrea Klimt recommended a tutor, and her academic advisor for PCE, Nancy Moniz helps Raquel choose the right courses.
