"I got involved in more clubs, met more people, made more friends, and cared more about how I was doing in school. If I hadn't gotten involved, I wouldn't be as confident and skilled a person as I am now."
What organizations did you belong to at UMass Dartmouth?
The Torch, our student newspaper, has been the largest part of my experience here at UMass Dartmouth. I learned about earning your keep as I started as a contributing writer, and worked my way up to Editor-in-Chief.
I learned about responsibility, and how the decisions you make can have far-reaching impact. I learned about leadership, and how a good leader doesn't do as much as they show. Most of all, I learned that if you work hard, good things will come to you.
What's one thing at UMass Dartmouth that no student should miss?
As cliché as it sounds, getting involved. I spent my first year doing really nothing other than going to classes. While classes are clearly essential to the college experience, I didn't feel like I was really learning until I got involved outside of the classroom. Once I started getting involved with the newspaper, it was a snowball effect from there. I got involved in more clubs, met more people, made more friends, and cared more about how I was doing in school. If I hadn't gotten involved, I wouldn't be as confident and skilled a person as I am now.
What advice would you like to share with future students?
You need to take advantage of the opportunities that you have here. It's really easy to go to class, do your homework, eat, go to sleep, and then do it all over again. If you do that, you won't be getting your money's worth, and you will be robbing yourself of some great experiences.
