George Henry Aulson IV

Major: Nursing
Academic Year: Senior
Hometown: Peabody, MA
"I’ve learned that by stepping out of your comfort zone, or by tearing down social barriers, people see you for who you are—and you become friends."
George is an active force on campus: swim team, assistant resident director, Greek life, and peer health educator. After earning his nursing degree, he hopes to work in a hospital medical surgery or pediatric unit and then return to school for a master’s degree in nursing.
Why did you choose to attend UMass Dartmouth?
Three reasons: Division III swimming and diving, a great nursing program, and because it was not too close and not too far from home.
Tell us about a great experience you've had here at UMass Dartmouth.
One of the best experiences I’ve ever had is going to Katrina Relief with Campus Crusade for Christ. I went with my swim team during spring break, and it was such an amazing experience. I couldn't tell you how heart breaking it was to see all these people without a house and some who haven't even seen their houses in 6 months. We gutted two houses, transferred pews to a church, and served food at a shelter. I had a great time with my friends, but it really was a life-changing experience for me.
Who are some of your favorite staff members?
Beth-Anne Vieira, the campus health educator, and Christopher Laib, the assistant director of SAIL: Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership. Beth-Anne is one of my favorites because she cares. Ever since I became a peer health educator, she has always been there for me. She always listens to you, is always thinking about you, and loves her job. Christopher, just like Beth-Anne, is very altruistic. He always tells it like it is and is really compassionate about the students.
What has been your greatest challenge?
Dealing with my father's death is the greatest challenge. My father was murdered when I was five years old, and it has been the toughest challenge that my family and I have ever had to face. A lot of what I do is because of him. The reason why I do so much is to live my life to the fullest and make a difference in other's lives. My father isn't sitting in the audience watching my swim meet, he isn't going to my programs for my residents, he isn't going to my fraternity meeting to meet all the brothers, and he isn't going to watch me get my diploma, but you know what? He has the best seat in the house because he is always in my heart. He gives me strength for everything I do, that's why I use my full name, George Henry Aulson IV.
What’s one thing about UMass Dartmouth that no student should miss?
Absolutely do not miss studying abroad. It was the best experience I’ve had here. I joined the Sicily program with the University, and it was amazing. Just going to a different country, learning about culture, and traveling was such a great time. If money is an issue, find a way to go anyway because it’s worth it in the end.
