Major: Marine Science and Technology
Academic Year: Graduate Student
Hometown: Canton, MA
"I've always enjoyed working on and around the ocean, and my major will allow me to pursue this as a career. "
How does your major fit into your life's plan?
I've always enjoyed working on and around the ocean, and my major will allow me to pursue this as a career. Between taking courses offered at SMAST and conducting my thesis research, I will have the flexibility to pursue a career in government service, teaching, or the private sector.
Why did you choose to attend UMass Dartmouth?
The faculty at SMAST are well known in their fields, excellent teachers, and are genuinely interested in helping students develop into professional marine scientists. Courses in statistics and marine policy make use of data collected by National Marine Fisheries Service surveys, and cover recent documents which effect fishing regulations. The school also collaborates a great deal with local members of the fishing industry and with faculty from other institutions to complete student projects.
What has been your greatest challenge?
The greatest challenge I had was adjusting from the expectations of undergraduate classes and research to graduate level classes and research.
