"I'm in the best place to learn new things and nourish the scientist in me."

How does your major fit into your life's plan?

I'm pursuing my doctoral degree in biomedical engineering and biotechnology. This major provides the perfect combination of my love for the biological sciences, and my desire to apply engineering skills to solve complex health-related problems and enhance our quality of life.

This program is designed in such a way that students, whose primary training is in engineering, can prepare themselves for entrance into one of the biomedical fields by completing a program leading to a Ph.D in biomedical engineering.

I've always wanted to distinguish myself by applying my professional-technical career in engineering to human health, and the biomedical engineering major really satisfied this goal.

My major allows me to learn about a broad range of areas, and integrate engineering and mathematics with biology and medicine in a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment.

What makes UMass Dartmouth special?

Having an opportunity to study a wide range of courses in a stimulating environment and meeting so many different people from different walks of life has always attracted me to UMass Dartmouth. The students in my program come from many different countries, cultures and academic backgrounds that enrich my experience as a student.

The University has an excellent campus with the necessary infrastructure in place, from a state-of-the art library to modern labs, facilities & equipment, and the warm people working there. The quality of education and research is also excellent. The lectures are very interactive, and the professors are always ready to help you. I'm in the best place to learn new things and nourish the scientist in me.

Why did you choose to attend UMass Dartmouth?

UMass Dartmouth offers a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology as part of the intercampus, interdisciplinary program. Students have access to a much greater range of education and research opportunities, expertise, and facilities than on one campus alone.

Each campus associated with the program has a number of departments and offers various interdepartmental on-campus/online courses. Massachusetts is also one of the largest and most successful biomedical clusters in the world. UMass Dartmouth inspires me as a student to pursue my studies in-state and eventually join the industry.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Incoming grad students should make sure to communicate and synchronize with their fellow researchers. Let them know what you're thinking, where you're stuck, and how you're trying to get around your problems. Learn techniques and gain confidence in your own ability to solve problems. Study in a steady manner and learn it the first time through. Schedule fun into your day and make it a priority. Take care of yourself. Exercise! It's fitness for the mind, too.
