UMD Solar Decathlon Project

The U.S. Department of Energy established the Solar Decathlon contest for universities in 2001.The contest stimulates innovative ideas and research into alternative energy sources for homes.

At UMass Dartmouth, the Solar Decathlon Project integrates sustaianbility into the curriculum and research. The hands-on project appeals to students and faculty from many disciplines and with varied interests: design, architecture, electrical & civil engineering, arts, business, community service and natural resource conservation. Those working on the project focus on designing the house, wielding a hammer, reaching out to the community for sponsorship, or a myriad of other opportunities, dependent upon their interests.

Students who want to be on the design team must take EGR 495/DES 495 The Sustainable House offered in the Fall with emphasis on solar home design, and in the Spring with emphasis on solar home construction.

The Solar Decathlon Project teaches students about solar energy as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. The total energy cost of the solar home is less than $1 a day--that is less than 1/4 the cost of a conventional home energy bill!

Get involved! Check out the UMD Solar Decathlon Project website. For additional information read "Solar Decathlon Brings Technology and Community Together."
