Nurses are an integral part of the healthcare team. They help promote health, guide the collaborative heatlhcare experience and shape the healthcare environment. At UMass Dartmouth the College of Nursing has started integrating environmental health training into the curriculum withcourses that include an emphasis on environmental health research. Undergraduate Nursing Courses that Include Environmental Health Training

Community Nursing

Theory/clinical lab course introducing the student to the community and aggregate populations as the client, and examining the role of the community health nurse as a facilitator of change in communities and populations. Principles of epidemiology, demography, environmental sciences and political organizations are synthesized with nursing concepts and principles to provide the basis for community nursing practice. Using the community process, stressors on and adaptations of communities and aggregates within communities are assessed, and theory based nursing care plans for populations are developed. Emphasis will be placed on implementation and evaluation of interventions designed to promote health of populations at risk by maximizing the population's self-care potential. The interaction of the environment and human health, from the perspective of an ecological framework. Physical, psychological, and psychosocial health responses to environmental toxins and infectious agents will be a central theme. Previous endeavors to maintain and improve the environment through the legislative process, public policy and regulation will be studied by examining case studies. The effects of war on the environment and public health will also be studied.
