Marine Renewable Energy: Wind, Wave, Tidal

The South Coast of Massachusetts is poised to attract new technology development in the marine renewables. The ocean, the largest area natural resource, is unveiling abandon opportunities for electricity production from wind, wave, and tides.

The Advanced Technology Manufacturing Center (ATMC), the School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) and the newly established Marine Renewable Energy Center (MREC) are pioneering clean energy research by tapping the power of ocean resources.

The UMass Dartmouth Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC) research focuses on Coastal Systems technologies. Its research facilities provide program management, mapping, and sensor development, www.atmc.umassd.edu

The School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) is conducting oceanic research to examine physical and biological environment of the Nuntucket Sound and its estuaries, www.smast.umassd.edu

Marine Renewable Energy Consortium (MREC) is fostering the development of ocean based renewable energy. It is a collaborative initiative comprised of industry, academia, government agencies, municipalities, public interest groups, and concerned individuals, www.mrec.umassd.edu

Marine Renewables: Research Priority Areas

  • Effects of marine renewable on recreational and commercial fishing, shipping; effects on resident or migratory species
  • Minimization of leaks, spills of other applications
  • Policy implications on marine conservation and management
  • Turbine, mooring and cable modeling, design and optimization
  • Water and habitat impacts of construction and decommissioning effects
  • Non-corrosive materials
  • Real-time monitoring and control systems
  • Benthic habitat loss or disturbance
  • Effects on coastal processes (e.g. sediment transport, wave attenuation, etc.)
