Applicants with disabilities

Applicants are not required to disclose a physical or learning disability. UMass Dartmouth's policy regarding admission and access prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. We invite applicants with disabilities to contact the university's Center for Access and Success (508.999.8711 or TTY: 508.999.8719) to discuss assistance which might be required.

Confidential conferences may be arranged to enable students to determine if UMass Dartmouth can meet their needs. The information will be used in accordance with 34 Code of Federal Regulations Part 104, and will not become part of the application file.

Exemption from testing requirement

You may claim an exemption from the SAT/ACT requirement if you have a learning disability. Federal non-discrimination statutes place strict limits on the ability of schools and universities to seek information regarding an applicant's disability prior to admission, and allow such inquiries only for the purpose of addressing past discrimination or a voluntary action to overcome the effects of conditions that resulted in limited participation {34 CFR 104.42 (d)}. You should address your request for exemption from testing to:

Please be advised that:

  1. providing this information is voluntary;
  2. any information received will be completely confidential;
  3. a refusal to furnish such information will not subject the applicant to any adverse treatment;
  4. the information will be used only in accordance with federal and state law.

At a minimum, you should send documentation of a diagnosis of a learning disability. To ensure that the information accurately reflects your ability to succeed at the university, we suggest that you voluntarily submit additional information to the Center for Access and Success. This information will be used solely to determine the university’s ability to meet your special needs. All information will be kept confidential.

Recommended psycho-educational evaluations could include:

  1. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale (WAIS-R or WISC-R), including sub-scale scores.
  2. Standardized achievement tests:
    • Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-educational Battery
    • Stanford Achievement Test
    • California Achievement Test
    • Metropolitan Achievement Test
    • Iowa Test of Basic Skills
    • SPA Achievement Series
