Old State House
Boston, MA
May 19, 2008

On May 19, 2008, the Mayors and City Managers of the Gateway Cities gathered together at the Old State House in Boston to sign an historic document uniting their administrations and communities in a collaborative effort to develop and pursue policies that can work collectively to promote the revitalization of their communities. The event featured a keynote address from Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray who expressed the Patrick-Murray Administration’s support for the Coalition, congratulated the Gateway City chief executives on their commitment to work together, and unveiled the administration’s Brownfields Support Teams Initiative to help urban communities with the redevelopment of contaminated properties. Several members of the state legislature were also in attendance to witness the compact signing and offer support and encouragement to their mayors and city managers.

In addition to unifying these eleven cities, the compact expresses the Coalition's deep desire to work closely with the governor, members of the legislature, and other state officials throughout the process of organizing a final and cohesive set of agenda items.

Together with the Urban Initiative, MassINC, and one another, the Gateway Cities Coalition is working to develop and advocate for an effective urban agenda for the Commonwealth that refocuses the state’s attention and investment upon the needs and the untapped potential of core urban communities that can act as regional engines of economic growth.
