Duplicate and mirror

Duplicating and mirroring are advanced moderator features that allow you to copy entire sections or branches of the site structure in different ways.

Before using the duplicate or mirror features

  1. Review the information on this page to determine if either feature applies to your situation
  2. Contact the web team for assistance: webdevelopment@umassd.edu

Duplicating: copy and edit separately

The duplicate feature allows you to copy a section or branch of the site structure, with or without its content. You then edit the original and the copy (the duplicate) separately, as they are now separate entities.

Mirroring: copy and keep identical

The mirror feautre allows you to copy a section or branch of the site structure, along with its content, and keep the original and the copy identical to each other throughout any edits. When you edit one instance of the mirror (either the original or the copy) all other instances of the mirror automatically receive that same edit.

To identify mirrored content, T4 displays a small red star next to mirrored content on the Modify content/select content screen, as shown in the image below.

A red star indicates content is mirrored.

Above: a red star indicates this section of the site structure, Law - Academics - Degree Programs, is mirrored. Edits made to this section will automatically show on its mirror (Admissions) and vise versa.

Using the duplicating and mirroring features

Before you begin, make sure you know the exact location in the site structure where you want to place the duplicate or mirror. T4 will ask you to specify that location.

If you want to copy a section or branch of the site structure...Then select...
    Without its content IGNORE CONTENT
Along with its content AND you want to edit the original and the copy separately DUPLICATE CONTENT
Along with its content AND you want edits to the original to automatically show in the copy and vise versa, keeping the original and the copy identical indefinitely MIRROR CONTENT

The image below shows the Duplicate Branch screen's Content Options drop-down menu displaying three available tasks: Ignore Content, Duplicate Content, and Mirror Content. The drop down menu on the duplicate screen. Available options to select are ignore content, duplicate content, and mirror content.

  4. Click SELECT; a site structure window appears.
  5. On the site structure window, select the section or branch where you want to place the duplicate or mirror.
  6. Click DUPLICATE.

Your result depends on your selection from the Duplicate Branch screen drop-down menu, as described in the table below.

If you selected...Then your result is...
IGNORE CONTENT

The duplicated section or branch shows on the portion of the site structure you specified. There's no content yet in this newly created section or branch.

Add new content the same way you would to any new empty section.

DUPLICATE CONTENT

The duplicated section or branch, along with its content, shows on the portion of the site structure you specified.

Modify content the same way you would any existing content.

MIRROR CONTENT

The mirrored section or branch, along with its content, shows on the portion of the site structure you specified. Whether you modify the original or the new mirror, your edits appear in both places, keeping the original and the new mirror identical to each other indefinitely.

Modify content the same way you would any existing content. Remember, you only need to edit one instance of the mirror for the edit to show in all instances of the mirror.
