Tuesday, September 3
11am – noon
Vietnam Veterans Peace Memorial Amphitheater
Rain location: Bailey Auditorium, Campus Center

The beginning of the academic year

Convocation marks the official beginning of the academic year at UMass Dartmouth. Taking its name from the Latin convocare (“to call together”), Convocation is your first opportunity to gather together as part of UMass Dartmouth’s academic community.

Get ready to be a Corsair! Bond with classmates as you begin this important part of your life.

This year, we are excited to welcome the Class of 2023 as well as transfer students who are joining the classes of 2022, 2021, and 2020. We celebrate your arrival on campus and the beginning of your university career.

Convocation 2017 - Chancellor Johnson greets students

Interim Dean Amy Shapiro and Chancellor Robert E. Johnson greet students following the fall 2017 ceremony.

The scholarly circle of life

Convocation recognizes the scholarly circle of life—the beginning of a jouney that will culminate in your Commencement.

The ceremony begins with an academic procession of faculty and staff, garbed in the traditional (and often colorful) regalia of the schools where they earned their highest degrees. Then, you’ll hear from various members of the campus community, including administrators and Chancellor Robert E. Johnson, who will extend an official welcome from the university.

Select members of the incoming class will share their winning essays from UMassD Believes 2019, the Class of 2023 Summer Writing Project.

The Convocation ceremony is a time to:

  • reflect on our shared values
  • get advice on how to be successful at UMassD
  • consider the importance of your educational work
  • recognize the university’s commitment to support you as you pursue your education

Remember: classes begin on Wednesday, September 4.
