Sandy Tavares was born and raised in New Bedford and was a commuter student during her first three years at UMassD. Daughter of immigrant parents from Saint Michael, Azores Portugal, she was the first in her family to attend a 4-year university and obtain her master’s degree.
While attending UMassD, Sandy was an active member of the Portuguese Language and she was the treasurer for the Psi Chi Honor Society. In her senior year, Sandy served as a resident assistant. It was during this experience that she discovered her passion of working in higher education.
Sandy currently resides in Worcester and works for a federal TRiO grant called the North Central Educational Opportunity Center at the Leominster Campus at Mount Wachusett Community. In her role as assistant director, she serves first generation/low income adults by providing assistance with financial aid applications, and college and career counseling.
