Summer Program for Diversity: Logic

Undergraduates from underrepresented groups are invited to study the logic and logical arguments surrounding paradoxes at UMass Dartmouth for one week in the summer of 2016.

‌There is a competitive application process for this Summer Program, and we will accept 10 students. Transportation to and from UMass Dartmouth (up to $500 USD), as well as room and board are provided. A modest stipend is awarded to each participant.

By participating in this supportive program, undergraduates study logic in an inclusive setting and learn that there is a place for them in the field and that they have something valuable to offer the discipline.

Program of Study

Paradoxes present the ultimate challenge—contradictions. Logicians and philosophers work at solving or dissolving paradoxes. This program is an opportunity for students to investigate a range of formal techniques and systems aimed at solving paradoxes.

‌Guest speakers will address Self-Referential, Set-Theoretic, Epistemic and other types of paradoxes, presenting current research from a variety of perspectives. Classes and workshops are led by visiting faculty and Graduate Assistants. 

Why attend?

Our goal is to provide resources and support for students interested in Logic and its applications so that they can apply to graduate and professional programs in Logic, Philosophy, Formal/Mathematical Philosophy, Computer Science, and other technical fields, such as Computational Genomics.

Faculty sponsors

Faculty can nominate students for this program. Faculty “sponsors” mentor students, helping them to prepare their applications, and, when possible and appropriate, work with the students after the Summer Program to help further the gains the students have made.

Application

While we expect that most students will come from four-year colleges, promising students from two-year institutions are also welcome to apply.
