What is SafeAssign?
SafeAssign, is a plagiarism detection service that evaluates the originality of students’ work by comparing their electronic documents to online sources and the SafeAssign databases.
How do I Get Access to SafeAssign?
The SafeAssign service is available through the myCourses learning managment system (Blackboard Vista) only. If you would like to use SafeAssign and have not already received training using the myCourses learning management system, you can sign up for the next training session at http://www.umassd.edu/cits/instructional/development/faculty/training_form.cfm.
This training is required for all faculty who wish to utilize the myCourses system as well as the SafeAssign tool.
How Does it Work?
Once a paper has been submitted to the database, an originality report is generated that highlights text matches to other documents. Faculty will then need to review and evaluate the report to determine if plagiarism is present.

If you plan to use the SafeAssign service for assignments in your course, you will need to add one of the following statements to your syllabus.
If you plan to use the plagiarism detection services for all assignments in your course, include this paragraph in your syllabus and review it during the first class meeting:
As a condition of continued enrollment in this course, you agree to submit all assignments to the SafeAssign services for textual comparison or originality review for the detection of possible plagiarism. All submitted assignments will be included in the UMass Dartmouth dedicated databases of SafeAssign assignments. These databases of assignments will be used solely for the purpose of detecting possible plagiarism during the grading process and during this term and in the future. Students who do not submit their papers electronically to the selected service will be required to submit copies of the cover page and first cited page of each source listed in the bibliography with the final paper in order to receive a grade on the assignment.
If you plan to use the plagiarism detection services for selected suspect assignments, include this paragraph in your syllabus and review it during the first class meeting:
Students should be aware that suspect assignments (e.g., those without drafts, without works cited pages, or with large departures in style) will be submitted to SafeAssign by the instructor for the purpose of detecting possible plagiarism. Submitted assignments will be included in the UMass Dartmouth dedicated databases of assignments. These databases of assignments will be used solely for the purpose of detecting possible plagiarism during the grading process during this term and in the future. Students must provide an electronic copy of their assignment to the instructor for submission to the service when plagiarism is suspected, in order to receive a grade on the assignment and to avoid possible sanctions.
To incorporate SafeAssign into your myCourses class, you need to do one of two things:
1. Create a SafeAssign link where students can upload their assignments to be checked for plagiarism (Note: SafeAssign does not connect directly to the myCourses Assignment tool; however, SafeAssignments can be graded through your course and, upon creation, are added automatically to the gradebook.)
2. Create a SafeAssignDirect Submit link where you can upload individual student papers that you feel are questionable in order to check for plagiarism (assignments uploaded in this way cannot be graded through SafeAssign and, therefore, are not automatically added to the gradebook.)
Adding Safe Assign to myCourses
Use this guide to add the SafeAssign tool to your myCourses site. This will guide you on how to add the SafeAssignment link and the SafeAssignDirect Submit link.
Creating a Safe Assignment
Use this guide if you would like students to upload their own papers using the SafeAssign service.
Safe Assign Direct
Use this guide if you would prefer to upload students' papers using the direct submit function. Only the instructor can submit to Safe Assign using the Direct Submit feature.
