The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth announced today that the former Director of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Rita R. Colwell would address the Universitys 104th annual commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 23, 2004. Dr. Colwell is currently a Senior Executive at Canon U.S. Life Sciences Corporation and a distinguished faculty member at both the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University.

April 29, 2004 Javanese Gamelan Music Featured At UMass Dartmouth DARTMOUTH, MA. - A spectacular concert of Indonesian music directed by world renowned composer I. M. Harjito will take place at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 12 noon. In addition, special guest artists Denni Harjito, Joseph Getter, Chris Miller, and Marc Perlman will also perform in the concert. The event will be held in room 154 of the College of Visual and Performing Arts building, Group VI, on the main campus in Dartmouth.

As always, the ensemble will present an exciting and diverse collection of music from around the world. Listeners can expect to hear enchanting sounds from Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean.

April 28, 2004 Special Needs Teacher Creates Affordable and effective Math Teaching Tool MathMitens Special Needs Teacher Creates Affordable and effective Math Teaching Tool MathMitens What would you do if you got laid off because of budget cuts, and then fell and broke an elbow precluding you from finding a new job? Special Needs teacher of 30 years, Annie Hayes decided she would use convalescence to develop an idea she had for teaching math into a new product  and MathMitTENS was born. Before getting laid off, Annie taught math to middle school students. Many of her students had only basic math skills and were tactile learners, frustrated with paper and pencil tasks. I was teaching pre-algebra to learners who hadnt mastered many basic math facts, often leading to very frustrating moments. These children needed tools that they owned and that could give them some levity as well as answers.

April 28, 2004 UMD Student Gallery Exhibit Set For May 3 Student Gallery exhibit in Chestnut Hall on Monday May 3rd, from 6- 12 p.m. Representing a broad cross section of disciplines at the university, more than 100 UMass Dartmouth student-artists will be showcasing their creations. It is expected that over 200 pieces of artworks will be on display. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

April 23, 2004 Astronomy Lectures This Spring DARTMOUTH, MA. - Two distinguished guest lecturers have been invited to speak about their work in astronomy at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this semester. On the evening of Monday, April 26th, Professor Harold McAlister of Georgia State University and director of the Mt. Wilson Observatory in California will discuss his research experiences. Then on Monday, May 10th the university will host a presentation by Dr. Don Boroson of MITs Lincoln Laboratories. Both lectures are scheduled to begin at 7pm in room 226 located in the science and engineering building (Group II) near the library.

This two-day exhibit features research projects conducted by graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. The UMD Sigma Xi Society is a university-based chapter of a national organization that promotes scholarly research activities in science and engineering.
