Our Training Program
The UMass Dartmouth Counseling Center has been training interns for over 25 years. We strive to provide our interns with exposure to a wide range of clinical issues while helping them to develop their own professional identity.
About the UMD Counseling Center
The Counseling Center at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is open 10 months of the year, serving the diverse population of nearly 10,000 students in the graduate and undergraduate community. The Counseling Center is open Mondaythrough Friday from 8am to 5pm and offers individual, couples and group counseling as well as outreach in the form of consultation and psychoeducational programming. The internship program consists of a weekly didactic training, group supervision, individual supervision and regular staff meetings.
Interns manage their own schedules, and are expected to provide individual counseling and run at least one group. They are each responsible for a two-hour block of our daily walk-in/crisis hours, for which a senior staff is back up. They attend weekly staff meetings and are encouraged to assist senior staff with any outreach programming they provide to the university. They collaborate with multiple offices on campus, the most frequent being Health Services, the Center for Academic Success (Disability Services), Career Services, as well as off campus providers. Interns receive two hours of individual supervision per week, in addition to group supervision, and the weekly didactic training which encompasses salient topics to college mental health.
About the training program
Interns receive experience and training in the provision of therapy, which comprises approximately 50 percent of their time at the UMD Counseling Center. In addition, interns have the opportunity to gain clinical experience through a range of activities (based on client availability and need) including:
- Intake Assessment
- Individual Psychotherapy
- Couples Counseling
- Group Therapy
- Crisis Management
Supervision and Training
Quality supervision is essential to the process of becoming a therapist, and it is a priority at the Counseling Center. We value an open-door policy toward supervision. Each intern has a primary supervisor, but all staff are available to our interns any time they have a question or need assistance.
- Individual Supervision: Interns receive 2 hours of individual supervision each week from a licensed psychologist. Other staff are available for additional consultation as needed. Interns are required to videotape a client of their choice 3 times per semester, and tapes are reviewed in supervision.
- Group Supervision: Interns attend weekly group supervision with the director of training. This is a space for peer case consultation, addressing professional development, and processing any concerns with the larger staff/university dynamics.
- Didactic Training: Interns attend a weekly seminar, which provides 1.5 hours of didactic training each week. Seminars include material on a range of clinical issues impacting the college population, diversity training, and case vignettes. Seminars are provided by various staff members and outside professionals, offering exposure to a range of theoretical orientations and expertise.
- Evaluation: Ongoing feedback and communication is highly valued at the Counseling Center. Goals are developed with each intern at the beginning of the year, and progress is discussed throughout the year. Interns are formally evaluated at the end of each semester, and given the opportunity to provide feedback to their supervisor and the training director throughout the year.
Supplementary Professional Experience
- Outreach: Interns will gain experience in providing outreach efforts to the university community. Opportunities may arise to provide psychoeducational presentations in undergraduate and graduate classes.
- Consultation: Interns may serve as consultants to students, faculty, and staff to answer questions regarding Counseling Center services and to facilitate referrals. They are welcome to serve as advisers to student organizations if the opportunity arises.
- Psychological Assessment: Interns may supplement their experience with the opportunity to conduct occasional psychological testing and write-up of an assessment battery, based on client need.

Selected candidates will meet with the staff for a structured interview. Candidates are encouraged to speak with our current interns during their visit to ask any additional questions.
