This course will examine capitalism and war, two of the most environmentally destructive forces in the universe. Why do soldiers kill and die for freedom? Are the dead free? Why do patriotic Americans support Middle Eastern wars to provide oil for Exxon-Mobil? Why did poor White Southerners proudly fight to give a few rich slave owners vast plantations? How did Nazis gain control of Germany, not promising personal prosperity, but ¿discipline, fidelity, honor?¿ We will explore these and many other questions about why many people's political-economic identities contradict their rational self-interests.
