Throughout history, breasts have metonymically embodied womanhood and femininity, and have been deployed to both conform and defy social norms. This course is designed to critically assess how human bodies, in particular the female breast, becomes a social site where we inscribe cultural meanings. The course is organized along the following question: how women¿s breasts have been fetishized, commodified, eroticized, domesticated, medicalized, and politicized. The course draws on feminist, philosophical, historical, and anthropological texts allowing students to critically analyze how women¿s breasts remain socially and politically contentions. Students are expected to conduct independent readings and research, and learn to theorize the body as a social and cultural artifact. Additionally, students will conduct a final research project (on their choice of topic), present their findings in class, and engage in course discussions and group presentations.
