On April 6, 2018 Mount Ida College announced that it was ceasing operations at the end of the 2018 Spring semester, leaving its students to find new institutions to complete their degrees. Many of the students were well into their courses of study and had to find programs that would accept all their earned credits to keep them on track towards graduation.

The UMassD Guarantee

UMass Dartmouth announced the "UMassD Guarantee" in which UMass Dartmouth would accept displaced Mount Ida students and their credits, so these students could finish their degrees on time.

CVPA programs for Mount Ida students

As part of the UMassD Guarantee, the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) met with faculty from Mount Ida and agreed to integrate two of their programs— Interior Architecture + Design and Fashion Design—as well as welcome students who are studying in programs we currently offer: Graphic Design, Animation and Game Arts. We received approval from the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education on May 30, 2018 for degree completion for the current Mount Ida College’s BS in Interior Architecture + Design and the BS in Fashion Design. We have also created a plan to accommodate those Mount Ida students in Animation and Game Arts and Graphic Design who are entering existing programs offered at the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The University has invested approximately $440,000 in the acquisition of assets and renovation of spaces to accommodate the integration of the degree completion of the Interior Architecture + Design and Fashion Design programs that will soon become new programs at the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
