This is a Bioengineering project Professor Fowler is working on in collaboration with Professor Mehmet Toner of the Harvard Medical School. The objective of this project is to try to improve the process of freezing living tissue by freezing the tissue in non-crystalline or vitreous ice rather than in the much more common crystalline ice. This project involves developing methods to achieve extremely rapid solidification of aqueous solutions. The applications of this work are in the freezing of blood cells, of valuable cell strains, and we hope someday, in the freezing of organs.
