DFO/DEOS Seminar - Perspectives on New England Fisheries by Cassie A. Canastra

East 101-103 and via Zoom Speaker background: Cassie Canastra earned her master's degree from the School for Marine Science and Technology in 2020. Her background is in commercial ground fishing, predominantly ground fish and sea scallops. Canastra's family created BASE, Inc (New Bedford's auction) in 1994. Since joining the family business, Canastra had a strong desire to development a better understanding of fishing regulations through stock assessments and management plans. SMAST guided Canastra in this unique learning experience and helped launch her involvement in fisheries management. She currently serves on the Scallop Advisory Panel and the Groundfish Advisory Panels. Her career since graduating from SMAST has expanded to also include vessel ownership of eight fishing vessels out of New Bedford. Her education from SMAST helped change her perspective on New England Fisheries, and to use this new perspective to help better the management of her fishing fleet.
