Talk by Cristiane Soares, Harvard U.: “Novos caminhos para ver o Brasil e o mundo”: Integrating Culture(s) in Portuguese Language Instruction (in Portuguese)
The teaching of language and culture are inextricably connected, and as highlighted in The Language Educator (Cutshall, 2012), in the best language education, the study of a language is synonymous with the study of its culture(s). In this presentation, we will reflect on the role of culture in language instruction and explore approaches that can make the culture “the true content” of our Portuguese language courses. Examples of daily activities will help instructors understand how they can foster linguistic and cultural competence simultaneously. The presentation will also examine the example of an intermediate program that uses a multicultural education approach to help students develop cultural and intercultural competency as well as cultural empathy and humility.
