"Where Do You Call Home?" Film screening and conversation with the director

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 5:30pm to 8:00pm

“¿De qué casa eres?” [Where Do You Call Home?] was the question faced by nearly 3,000 Spanish children exiled in the Soviet Union during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). The film narrates the journey of one of them, Angelita Pérez -- director Ana Pérez-Quiroga's mother -- who lived in Russian boarding schools from the age of 4 to 24, until she completed her medical studies in Moscow, later moving to Portugal, where she still lives today.

The film tells a story of resilience, love, and identity, intertwining past and present, heritage and memory. It explores the bond between mother and daughter – the artist/filmmaker and her mother – through shared songs, stories, and objects. Revisiting Angelita’s journey is both a tribute to her strength and a declaration of love. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director led by Prof. Marta Del Pozo Ortea (GLC/Spanish).

Ana Pérez-Quiroga is a visual artist, performer and film director who lives and works in Lisbon. Her work explores everyday life, common objects, color, identity, gender, queer feminism, memory and post-memory.
