DESCRIPTION:Dr. Aneesa A. Baboolal presents,"Are You Wearing a Tablecloth?"
Understanding Intersectional Harassment of Muslim and Immigrant Women. Lu
nch provided.  Post 9/11 research centered marginalized immigrant and rac
ial/ethnic minority communities through the lens of discrimination, survei
llance, and violence, with a focus on men’s experiences related to racia
l profiling, detention, and deportations. In the last decade, few studies
have critically assessed how gender-based harassment of Muslim women is si
multaneously linked to hypervisibility (veiling), while “invisible” (n
on-veiled) Muslim women also remain susceptible to covert and overt forms
of violence in the public sphere. Utilizing qualitative in-depth interview
s with Muslim women across intersecting racial/ethnic, immigrant/national
identity, and citizenship statuses, findings indicate that women embrace v
arious strategies to contend with myriad forms of harassment that disrupt
stereotypes of passive victimhood, while navigating a tense socio-politica
 l climate in the US.\nEvent page: https://www.umassd.edu/events/cms/womens
