DESCRIPTION:Department of Fisheries Oceanography "Applying Decision Science
to Natural Resource Management"Jonathan CummingsBiologist, U.S. Fish and
 Wildlife Service Wednesday, February 25, 20263:00 - 4:00 pmSMAST E 101-103
and via Zoom Abstract: This will be a wide ranging talk exploring the ins
ights and challenges of practicing applied science and utilizing decision
theory to aid natural resource management. I'll begin with an overview of
my career, an explanation of structured decision making, and the flavors o
f applied science I practice. From there, based on audience participation
, I will provide greater detail on some selected applications and case stu
dies of interest. Potential case studies address monitoring design, emerge
ncy management of endangered species, stakeholder engagement in decision p
rocesses, trade-off analysis, allocation of fish in a stocking program, pr
edicting population viability, conducting expert elicitation of climate im
pacts on species persistence, and more. Join Meetinghttps://umassd.zoom.us
