 E 101-103 and via Zoom Abstract: Baited pots are an attractive gear choice
  when gear-switching because they are fuel efficient, species-selective, p
 roduce low seabed impacts, yield high quality fish, and offer low discard 
 mortality of nontargeted species. This talk will review fish behaviour tow
 ard baited pots. It will consider the behaviour of fish in three phases. F
 ish must first sense and be attracted to the gear. Once they have located 
 the gear, they must decide to enter, which is followed by retention of cor
 rect species and sizes of fish. Each phase of the capture process involves
  a suite of senses, reactions, and choices. Paul grew up in a small farm t
 own in south-central Ontario.  In 1991 he moved to Halifax to undertake a
  BSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography from Dalhousie University.  He th
 en moved to St. John’s in 1996 to start graduate school at Memorial Univ
 ersity.  He completed an MSc under the supervision of Pingguo He, followe
 d by PhD under the supervision of Stephen Walsh.   He joined in the Marin
 e Institute in 2003, and in 2005 became Director of the Centre for Sustain
 able Aquatic Resources, which is part of the School of Fisheries. He has a
  broad knowledge of fisheries issues with extensive experience in the area
  of fishing gear innovation. He is responsible for the institute’s flume
  tank and has a specific interest in the development of novel fishing syst
