Jaime Fastino ’20 received inspiration from faculty to someday become a college professor.

Jaime Fastino ’20 knows what she doesn’t want to do.

The accounting and finance major from Rehoboth, MA, had an internship in tax accounting, which is the field that was her first choice. “I’m glad I had the experience, because I learned it wasn’t for me!” Jaime laughed. What is for her? “Long-term, I want to be a college professor,” she said. “I want to be the professor that explains things so well students get that ‘A-ha!’ moment.”

Her inspiration comes from the faculty in the Charlton College of Business, who have given her many of those moments. “Our professors really work to make their subjects clear for us,” she said. “And they are available for us when we need more help and give us networking opportunities and connections.” Her current internship came about when one of the faculty sent out an email to alert students of an opportunity at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. There, Jaime works with financial analysts to pull reports and monitor cash flow. She finds it very satisfying.

Jaime says her experience at UMass Dartmouth has given her leadership and networking opportunities that will serve her well when she graduates. She was captain of the women’s tennis team, and she teaches tennis in the community. She is also vice president of the business honor society and has helped organize networking events that bring professionals to campus. “It is a great community. We get lots of advice and input,” she said. “The University is just the right size – you don’t get lost in a sea of people and you make personal connections with other students, with professors. As a business school, it really provides a quality experience.”

As Jaime weighs her options, she knows she is ready for the next step. “I had a great experience at the University, in classes, in activities, in athletics. It’s a place where everyone wants you to succeed.”
