What is Watch Your BAC?

Watch Your BAC is a campaign designed to educate UMass Dartmouth students about alcohol and encourage students who drink to do so more safely.

Your "BAC" is your blood alcohol concentration. Watch Your BAC = Watch Your Blood Alcohol Concentration. Clever, eh? We thought so, too. But, we can't take all the credit. Watch Your BAC originated at the University of Notre Dame and was later adopted by several colleges in the Tampa Bay area, including the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida. We've modified it somewhat and are bringing it to UMass Dartmouth.

The UMass Dartmouth Peer Health Educators (PHEs) will be tabling, conducting outreach, and giving presentations to educate students about drinking in a safer way. The PHEs will be giving away Green Zone® cards at all of these events. (Click here to learn more about Green Zone® cards and how to get yours!)

Students can also email us to get their own personalized Green Zone® card.

You'll also be hearing more from us via print, electronic, and social media.

What's in it for me?

Watch Your BAC is for you if you drink alcohol but want to avoid the following:

  • making a sacrifice to the porcelin god
  • late night or early morning trips to the ER
  • drunk dialing or texting your ex
  • having to explain embarrassing photos of yourself posted on social media
  • a hangover
  • a declining GPA
  • get the idea.

You're smart, so party smart.  Find out how by reading BAC Basics and Keep It in The Green.  And, don't forget "Like" the UMass Dartmouth Peer Health Educators Facebook page and follow us on Twitter (@UMDPHE) for updates. (And, who knows, maybe a chance to win some swag.)

What if I don't drink?

There are lots of good reasons why people choose not to drink alcohol. And, you don't need to drink to have fun.  But, we know that choosing not to drink when lots of other people are drinking can be difficult. Sometimes you might feel like the only person who is not drinking. We want you to know that you're not alone. 23% of UMass Dartmouth undergraduate students don't drink alcohol at all; another 20% of students haven't drank within the past month. Taken together, over 40% of undergraduate students has not drank alcohol within the past month.

(When we present these statistics, they are often met by disbelief. But, we got the facts from you! Every other spring, we conduct the American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA). This data is from our spring 2018 survey.)
