UMass Dartmouth's Leduc Center for Civic Engagement Plants Seed through Kids2College Initiative
210 Fall River 5th Graders Complete 5 Week College Awareness Curriculum with Tour of UMass Dartmouth Campus & Planting Crops at the Share the Harvest Fields at the YMCA in Dartmouth
Today UMass Dartmouth's Leduc Center for Civic Engagement hosted 210 fifth grade students from the Greene elementary school and Doran community school in Fall River. The students are part of the Leduc Center's Kids2College program, an initiative between the University and the Fall River Public Schools. The Kids2College initiative includes a 5 week college-awareness curriculum designed to increase student's awareness of how education impacts their future life choices. Students involved in the initiative had the opportunity to learn more about college, explore careers, make the connection between college and job opportunities, and begin planning for their future. The curriculum is taught by current UMass Dartmouth students with a focus on community engagement.
The Fall River students spent the day touring UMass Dartmouth's residential halls, classrooms, and the Claire T. Carney Library. The students also met the University's beloved mascot Arnie the Corsair. Following the visit to campus, the students traveled to the YMCA in Dartmouth to take part in community service work planting crops at the Sharing the Harvest fields at the YMCA in Dartmouth. Sharing the Harvest Community Farm is a non-profit, volunteer-driven farm that aims to help fight hunger in our community. It was established in 2006 to reduce hunger, create volunteer stewardship and increase agricultural education.
