UMass Dartmouth professor of fisheries oceanography recognized for outstanding service
Dr. Pingguo He receives award for his contributions to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea
Dr. Pingguo He, Professor of fisheries oceanography at UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science & Technology, has been awarded the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Service Award in recognition of his contributions to the organization.
The ICES, located in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a global organization that develops science and advice to support the sustainable use of oceans. The organization, which boasts a network of more than 4,000 scientists around the country, coordinates and promotes marine research on oceanography, the marine environment, the marine ecosystem, and on living marine resources in the North Atlantic.
Over the last three years, He has served as chair of the organization’s Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour, which initiates and reviews investigations of scientists and technologists concerned with all aspects of the design, planning, and testing of fishing gears for bycatch and discard reduction, as well as environmentally benign fishing gears and methods.
“On behalf of the ICES Council, Science Committee, Advisory Committee, and Secretariat, I would like to take this opportunity to your institute for allowing Pingguo He to take a leading role in the ICES community,” said Anne Christine Brusendorff, General Secretary of ICES. “Pingguo He as Chair of the ICES Food and Agriculture Organization Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour and his group members have been extremely proactive in addressing their Terms of Reference, and we greatly appreciate their work.”
