NBSO POPS CONCERT AND FIREWORKS AT UMASS DARTMOUTH JULY 2 The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will hold its 10th annual Independence Day Pops Concert and Fireworks display on Friday July 2nd beginning at 6:00 p.m. Weather permitting the University anticipates a large and enthusiastic audience, estimated at more than 20,000. Ten years ago, UMass Dartmouth and the Town of Dartmouth broke new ground by creating a new community celebration of Independence Day - a spectacular Pops concert by the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and a wonderful fireworks display. This truly is a unique regional tradition, said Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack. It is my great pleasure to invite every Dartmouth and SouthCoast resident to join us on the UMD campus on the evening of Friday, July 2nd."
Southcoast Education Compact Launches Mathematics Teacher Externship Program
DARTMOUTH, MA. During the summer months, local educators and businesspersons will explore the connection between the mathematics courses that students study in school and the math challenges they face in the workplace. This innovative program is part of a new teacher externship program taking place in nine businesses in the region. The Mathematics Teacher Externship Program (MTEP) will place b n teachers in a local business for two days to team with an employee on a specific math-related project or experience.
UMD Selects New Bedford Woman For Dukakis Public Service Internship

Beginning on June 28, Ms. Andrade will work as a full-time intern for the Investigations Division at the Office of Attorney General Tom Reilly in Boston.

The debutante of honor was a computer program-called FVCOM, for Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model-that simulates the behavior of the coastal ocean, much as meteorologists models simulate atmospheric activity.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth announced that it has received a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support new partnerships for innovation between the University and businesses in the region. This announcement culminates a multi-year effort led by Engineering Dean Farhad Azadivar. Javanese Gamelan Music Featured At UMass Dartmouth

Harjito will take place at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 12 noon. Special Needs Teacher Creates Affordable and effective Math Teaching Tool MathMitens What would you do if you got laid off because of budget cuts, and then fell and broke an elbow precluding you from finding a new job? Special Needs teacher of 30 years, Annie Hayes decided she would use convalescence to develop an idea she had for teaching math into a new product and MathMitTENS was born. Before getting laid off, Annie taught math to middle school students. Many of her students had only basic math skills and were tactile learners, frustrated with paper and pencil tasks. I was teaching pre-algebra to learners who hadnt mastered many basic math facts, often leading to very frustrating moments. These children needed tools that they owned and that could give them some levity as well as answers.
