Transfer Orientation

Transfer Orientation is an online experience: you will be able to complete the online orientation at your own pace, at any time.

  1. Log in: myUMassD
  2. Select: New Students tab
  3. Select: Orientation heading
  4. Click: Online Orientation

Online orientation will answer your questions about placement testing, MassTransfer, and how to find and read your Advisement Report (which shows where your transfer credits have gone).

Once you complete your online orientation, you will have a list of next steps, including:

  • Take your placement tests (See Placement Test Section Below)
  • Contact your academic advisor for your personalized appointment to select your first semester classes
  • Check UMassD Bookstore in your COIN account to view the required course materials
  • Make your housing deposit and selecting housing
  • Select a meal plan
  • Get your UMass Pass (student ID) prior to the start of classes
  • Pay your bill
  • Secure your mandatory health insurance
  • Provide proof of immunization to Student Health Services
  • Complete Not Anymore: an interactive online experience that empowers our students with the tools to address everything from sexual and domestic violence to stalking, bullying, and harassment

Placement Testing for Transfer Students

As a transfer student, you are required to complete placement testing if you have not received credit for a math or foreign language course or have not received AP credits with a score of 3 or higher. Online & hybrid program students will be discussing math & foreign language with their advisor but not completing the placement test. 

For Fall Start Term - All transfer students are required to complete placement testing to ensure proper placement into math and foreign language courses.  To complete your placement testing:

  1. You must have paid your enrollment deposit to the University.
  2. Testing opens April 1.
  3. You MUST complete your placement test prior to your registration.
  4. Log into the UMassD portal using your newly created login.
  5. Click on the New Student tab.
  6. Click on the Placement test link.
  7. Read all of the instructions.
  8. Click the take test button.

For a Spring Start Term - All transfer students are required to complete placement testing to ensure proper placement into math and foreign language courses. To complete your placement testing:

 Math placement - Students taking placement exams will be required to complete the elementary algebra exam, and if your program of study requires calculus, you will also be required to take the pre-calculus exam.  If your major is one of the following, you will need to take both the algebra and the pre-calculus exam.  

  1. All Engineering majors
  2. Chemistry majors
  3. Math majors

All other majors must complete the algebra level exam. You may elect to take the pre-calculus exam if you are interested in taking a calculus course in the future. Biology majors wishing to follow a pre-health track should take the pre-calculus exam.

Foreign Language - Students whose majors require the study of a foreign language are required to take a foreign language exam provided they studied the language in high school. Otherwise, you will begin your program of study with an entry level course.  You will select the foreign language test you wish to take.Majors whose programs require a foreign language are: Anthropology, Art History, Arts & Sciences Undeclared, Crime and Justice Studies, Economics, English, French, History, Liberal Arts, Math, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Spanish and Women’s and Gender Studies.
