POR 640/740-01. Foundation and Reconstruction in Lusophone African Narrative (3 credits)

Abstract. This class will offer a theoretically informed overview of twentieth and twenty-first-century fiction produced in the three major PALOP (Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa): Angola, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. Following reading and discussion of foundational works of Angolan, Cape-Verdean, and Mozambican literatures published in the colonial period, we will turn to more recent narratives (novels, short stories, and films) that engage with multiple forms and processes of reconstruction: post-decolonization and post-war (re)building of communities; reorientations of cultural horizons in the era of globalization; investigations of historical and cultural memory; reinventions of ethnic, racial, and national identity; etc. Discussions, research presentations, and papers will aim to situate literary readings in theoretical and comparative contexts (mainly of postcolonial theory and modern cultural identity of sub-Saharan Africa), while at the same time exploring their intrinsic qualities as aesthetic products bridging African and Western narrative traditions.

Abstract. Inspired by Lisi Schoenbach’s Pragmatic Modernism (2012), this MA and PhD seminar will study habits and everyday life in a collection of literary works from the Portuguese-speaking world, including Machado de Assis’s Dom Casmurro, Eça de Queirós’s A ilustre casa de Ramires, Clarice Lispector’s Laços de família, Pepetela’s Jaime Bunda e a morte do americano, and Isabela Figueiredo’s Caderno de memórias coloniais. (Please note that we will be reading specific, required editions of these works that will be available soon at UMass Dartmouth’s bookstore.)

POR 750-01. Desire in Portuguese and Brazilian Fiction (3 credits)

Abstract: This class aims at studying the theme of desire in Portuguese and Brazilian authors (from the nineteenth century to the present). The goal is to read these authors, in their distinct contexts, with a focus on how they construct the notion of desire (with an eye on both its aesthetic and expressive aspects and its cultural and ideological dimensions). These literary readings will be complemented by theoretical texts about desire from the areas of psychoanalysis (Freud and Lacan), anthropology (R. Girard) and philosophy (Plato, St. Augustine, Spinoza, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Sartre, Nietzsche, Deleuze). We will study literary works from Camilo Castelo Branco (O Santo da Montanha, Amor de Perdição, A Queda dum Anjo), José de Alencar (Iracema), Eça de Queirós (A Cidade e as Serras), Machado de Assis (Dom Casmurro), Raduan Nassar (Um Copo de Cólera, Lavoura Arcaica), António Lobo Antunes (Caminho como uma Casa em Chamas), João Tordo (Bibliografia Involuntária dos Amantes), Bernardo Carvalho (O Sol se põe em São Paulo), Rubem Fonseca (O Seminarista) and Patricia Melo (Elogio da Mentira).
