Black Studies

The contributions of Black peoples are crucial to the story of the United States and to world history. The Black Studies minor offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the society, culture, and history of Africans and people of African descent.

‌You’ll draw on the expertise of scholars in the fields of sociology, literature, the visual and performing arts, history, political science, education, economics and anthropology to learn about the African and African-American experience.

With the Black Studies minor, you will:

explore the arts, humanities, and social sciences from Afro-centric perspectives
engage in the social and intellectual traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora
pursue original research, civic engagement projects, and creative activities that contribute to the understanding of issues facing people of African descent

Choose from a broad range of courses in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Courses such as BLS 101: Intro to Black Studies and BLS 480: Capstone Seminar in Black Studies are unique to the minor. Each student is required to complete 18 credits, including 4 elective courses.
