The 36-credit non-degree certificate is intended for students without a bachelor's degree. Certificate students enroll in a condensed series of undergraduate studio and academic courses to develop appropriate technical skills and further develop their individual aesthetic for sustained professional work. Students may be full-time or a part-time.
Certificate students work alongside CVPA students and are expected to perform on comparable technical and creative levels.
The certificate in fine arts encompasses:
Students who complete the 36-credit certificate program:
- demonstrate mastery of specific technical skills within the discipline
- are knowledgeable about current trends and historical precedents in their specific media
- gain awareness of professional paths available in the field
A maximum of 15 credits may be awarded towards the certificate with documented participation in prior educational experiences from recognized institutions or workshops where no formal university credit is available, such as Haystack, Arrowmont, Penland, Vermont Studio School, Skowhegan, or international centers of learning.
To apply to the Fine Arts certificate program, applicants submit a letter of request to the CVPA Dean.
The letter should include:
- the subject area you are interested in
- your goals in pursuing the certificate
- transcripts of any undergraduate work completed and records of related non-credit experience at recognized national workshops, residencies, or international centers of learning
Additionally, submit your portfolio with 10 images of your work via SlideRoom.
Your application materials and images will be reviewed within 2 weeks of receipt, and you will be notified promptly.
During the review process, applicants may be asked to schedule an interview.
If an applicant is judged to be insufficiently prepared in technical areas, or lacks clear focus but is judged to have potential for learning and personal growth, the applicant may enroll in one or more courses as a non-certificate special student and re-apply to the certificate program.
For those accepted into the certificate program, the Dean's Office will notify the Office of the Registrar to create a non-degree student file.
Registration for certificate students takes place after the close of the registration period for degree students. Because certificate students are placed in regularly-scheduled classes, admission may be dependent on space availability.
