Ether Use

General Policy

Use or storage of ether is strongly discouraged in animal facilities or in proximity to areas where animal use occurs because it is extremely flammable and explosive.

Animals anesthetized or euthanized with ether raise safety concerns regarding carcass disposal. Ether-laden carcasses can evolve vapor, creating fire and explosion risks. Use of ether requires approval on a case-by-case basis by IACUC and the Environmental Health & Safety Office.  Any use of ether must be coordinated with the Environmental Health & Safety Office.
