UMassD is a Tier 1 national research university.

UMass Dartmouth’s "Doctoral University" Carnegie classification and ranking by U.S. News & World Report puts it in the top 10 percent among all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. The "national university" designation is reserved for universities that offer undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, and are committed to producing groundbreaking research.

U.S. News considers 15 factors in its rankings methodology, including graduation and retention rates, assessment of excellence by peers and guidance counselors, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, and alumni giving.
