UMass Dartmouth was 1 of 18 regional and doctoral research institutions to receive competitive funding from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) to host Careers in Aging Week this year. Other recipients included Penn State and The University of Washington.

Gerontological Society of America Student Ambassador

Senior Nursing student and Gerontology minor Anna-Rae LeClaire has been enrolled for a one-year term as the Gerontological Society of America Student Ambassador at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Universities around the country are invited to apply for the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Ambassador program and this position is awarded to gerontology programs with a dedication to advancing aging awareness and research. As UMass Dartmouth’s first Student Ambassador, Anna-Rae is excited about the field of aging and eager to coordinate and generate aging-related interests on campus in partnership with the Ora M. DeJesus Gerontology Center. Center Director Andrew Revell serves as the Faculty Advisor for the GSA Ambassador Program at UMass Dartmouth.

Coastline Elderly Services

Coastline Elderly Services hosts Annual Meeting and asks Center Director, Dr. Andrew Revell, to be the key note speaker. Dr. Revell's presentation, "Reduction of Cognitive Decline in Late Life: How to Age Successfully " is featured in November issue of Senior Scope.

The 9th Annual Regional Conference of Psi Chi, The International Honor Society in Psychology was held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the University's Woodland Commons. The Gerontology Center co-sponsored the presentation "Substance Abuse over the Lifespan: Trends and Empirically Supported Interventions" by Jacqueline Alfonso Barry, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology, Emmanuel College, Boston, MA. The annual conference is co-sponsored by Psi Chi and the UMass Dartmouth Psychology Club

As part of our system wide collaboration with others in Gerontology, The Center was featured at the University of Massachusetts multi-campus booth at the 64th Annual Meeting of The Gerontological Society of America in Boston, November 18-22, 2011. The UMass system exhibit included programs from the 4 campuses: The UMass Dartmouth Gerontology Center, UMass Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences, UMass Lowell Nursing and UMass Medical (School of Nursing, Rosalie Wolf Center, and the Division of Medicine).

Jack M. Gould Memorial Scholarship awarded to student pursing Age-Related Research

Lauren Papa is an undergraduate psychology student engaged in age-related research, and the recipient of a competitive research grant from the University's Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR).

Emily Gabois, a graduate of the Combined BA/MA Psychology Program at UMass Dartmouth, was accepted into the Ph.D. Gerontology Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, beginning in Fall 2011. She will pursue research in enhancing public policy services for older adults.

Jack M. Gould Memorial Scholarship Award
The purpose of the Jack M. Gould Memorial Scholarship Award is to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to pursue professional careers in service to the elderly. It was established to honor the work of the late Jack M. Gould, former director of the New Bedford Council on Aging, who was active for many years in service to elders of southeastern Massachusetts. For more information about this award or others, please contact the Office of Advancement.
