What is Mock Interview Day? (Connect, Practice, Succeed)
A Mock Interview Day (MID) is conducted between a UMass Dartmouth student interviewee and an industry professional. This event offers students the chance to participate in simulated job interviews with industry professionals, providing a valuable opportunity to practice and refine your interview skills. By participating, you will gain firsthand experience, receive constructive feedback, and improve your confidence in professional interview settings. This event allows you to connect with employers, learn how to effectively communicate your strengths, and prepare for future job searches.
It's an excellent way to build your resume, enhance your interview techniques, and make valuable industry connections.

In a 30-Minute Mock Interview, you will practice your behavioral-based interviewing skills, as well as an interviewing approach tailored to a specific discipline/field of study, internship/job, and/or graduate school. You will receive invaluable feedback from UMass Dartmouth Employer Partners, Alumni, and Recruiters.
How to Register for Mock Interview Day

- Log into Handshake through either the UMass Dartmouth Career Center portal or the QuickLaunch menu in myUMassD.
- Click on your Handshake profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select “Documents” and follow the prompts.
Step 2: Register for the Mock Interview Day by applying to THIS job.

- Click on your Handshake profile icon (your initials) in the upper-right corner.
- Select “My Jobs,” then, from the listed options, click on the title that starts with the word “Interview…”
- Once the Interview Schedule page opens, scroll down and select the desired interview Time Slot.
Step 4: Mark your calendar with the date and time you selected. Reschedule or cancel the mock interview if your availability changes to avoid a No-show penalty. You can reschedule through Handshake by 11:59 p.m. two business days prior to the mock interview without penalty.
No Show/Late Cancellation Policy for Interviews
A missed mock interview due to a no-show or a late cancellation reflects poorly on you and all students at UMass Dartmouth. Additionally, it wastes a valuable interview slot for the employer and for other students seeking an opportunity to practice their interviewing skills. You may cancel your interview online through Handshake up until 11:59 p.m. two business days prior to the interview without penalty. The following penalties will be imposed if you cancel a mock interview late or do not show. The following penalties will be imposed if you cancel an interview late or do not show.
Late cancellations during an academic year
- 1st offense: No penalty is assessed, but your Handshake account is noted.
- 2nd offense: Your account is blocked from participating in the interviewing process until an email letter of apology to the employer or interviewer is reviewed by the career center. This must be completed within 30 days, or your account is disabled for the duration of the academic year.
- 3rd offense: Your account is permanently disabled, and you will not have access to any Handshake features for the duration of the academic year. A meeting with the Career Center is required.
How to Prepare for a Mock Interview Day
1. Pre-Mock Interview Preparation:
- Resume Review: Ensure your resume is up-to-date, error-free, and tailored to the types of positions you are interested in. Review your resume with the Career Center.
- Practice: Practice answering common interview questions (e.g., "Tell me about yourself," "Why are you interested in this position?"). Consider practicing with a friend or family member.
- Review other resources:
- Attend the Big Interview Launch program
- Practice with Big Interview online interviewing software
- Professional Attire: Dress professionally for your mock interview, as you would for a real interview. Business professional attire is recommended.
- Prepare Questions: Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer about the organization, the role, and career opportunities.
2. Day of the Mock Interview:
- Arrive on Time: Arrive at the designated location at least 15 minutes before your scheduled interview time.
- Bring Copies of Your Resume: Bring several copies of your resume to give to the interviewer.
- Be Prepared: Be ready to discuss your skills, experiences, and career goals.
- Be Enthusiastic and Engaged: Show enthusiasm and engage in a thoughtful conversation with the interviewer.
3. Post-Mock Interview Follow-Up:
- Thank You Note: Send a thank-you email to the interviewer within 24 hours of your mock interview. Express your appreciation for their time and feedback.
- Reflect on Feedback: Carefully review the feedback you received from the interviewer and identify areas where you can improve.
- Practice and Refine: Use the feedback to refine your interviewing skills and prepare for future interviews.
