Course Topic Description: Vincent van Gogh famously said that "Drawing is the root of everything." This is because drawing teaches us to see, and to know what we are seeing. Drawing is a large subject that covers a wide range of investigation, materials, and techniques. This course will introduce a number of these aspects, and there will be flexibility in terms of focus and materials students can choose from. Students will work with the professor to determine the focus best suited to their needs. Among these topics will be: drawing as seeing; drawing as knowing; linear perspective; constructive drawing; planes, values, and shapes; figure drawing and anatomy; materials and their uses; wet on wet vs wet on dry drawing; tight vs loose drawing; expansive drawing.
