Course Topic Description: This course would cover various aspects of the role of prisons in the making of the modern world on a global scale. It will engage themes, questions, and debates at the heart of carceral studies, notably: labor and capitalism, including surveillance capitalism; race and slavery; and postmodern scholarship following Foucault. The course would additionally focus on political prison in its myriad forms, and the importance of histories of colonialism for the development of these apparatuses.
