Commonwealth Fellows Program

The Commonwealth Fellows Program provides an automatic $15,000 scholarship to incoming law students who are either Massachusetts residents or have earned an undergraduate degree from a Massachusetts public college or university, and who meet the following academic requirements:

  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2, and
  • One of the following qualifying test scores:
    • LSAT: 152 or higher
    • GRE: combined verbal and quantitative reasoning scores that convert to an LSAT score of 152 or higher
    • JD-Next: 720 or higher

Full-time students will receive $5,000/year for three years, and part-time students will receive $3,750/year for four years. The Commonwealth Fellows scholarships are awarded in addition to other merit- and need-based scholarships.

Consideration for the scholarship is automatic with the application. There is no separate application form. Students who meet the qualifying criteria are guaranteed acceptance barring any character and fitness issues and will have a decision within two weeks of a file becoming complete.

The Commonwealth Fellows program is the newest addition to UMass Law's access to justice and community engagement programs, which advance justice within and beyond the Commonwealth through research, writing, teaching, learning, practice, and engagement with the profession.
