A study of the limitations placed on police practices by federal and state constitutions and statutes, focusing on the law of arrest, search and seizure, pre-trial identification procedures and trial rights, electronic surveillance, the right to confrontation, the privilege against self-incrimination, and the right to counsel, including the application of the Miranda rule.

The Place of Prejudice: A Case for Reasoning Within the World, Harvard University Press
Adam Sandel is an Assistant Professor at UMass Law. His research interests lie at the intersection of law and philosophy, with a focus on criminal law and procedure and philosophical questions about crime and punishment. His current projects explore the dual role of the prosecutor as advocate and minister of justice, the proper scope of prosecutorial discretion, the strengths and weaknesses of public safety as an aim of law enforcement, and the moral implications of algorithmic decision-making in the criminal justice system.
He is the author of Happiness in Action: A Philosopher’s Guide to the Good Life (Harvard University Press, 2022) and The Place of Prejudice: A Case for Reasoning within the World (Harvard University Press, 2014).
Before entering legal academia, Sandel served as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn. He received his JD from Harvard Law School and holds a DPhil in Political Theory from the University of Oxford. He previously taught as a Lecturer on Social Studies at Harvard College.
