Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 12:00-1:00pm
Foster Administration Building

What do we know about bilingual language acquisition, in particular the acquisition of a heritage language? What are the facts and what are myths about bilingualism?
This talk addresses the development of bilingualism in childhood by presenting and discussing the findings of ongoing research on language development in multilingual settings and showing that bilingual language acquisition is a natural process of language development.

Cristina Flores is Associate Professor at the Department of German and Slavic Studies at the University of Minho (Portugal). She works on Bilingualism, Language Acquisition and Attrition. She has published several papers and book chapters in international and national peer-reviewed journals. She also coordinated and participated in several projects on Bilingualism. Since 2013, she has been Director of the Department of German and Slavic Studies and, since 2016, Deputy Director of the Research Center on Humanities (CEHUM) at the University of Minho.

Sponsored by the Department of Portuguese at UMass Dartmouth, and the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures – Spanish and Portuguese Program at UMass Amherst.
