Dean to CVPA Students on August 21

August 21, 2023

Dear CVPA Students,

I know that the news of CVPA’s unexpected departure from our well-loved Star Store facility has saddened all of us, and also raised many questions about where those courses and programs will be accommodated this year. Please know that we are working around the clock to find suitable space for all of our programs and activities, as well as to coordinate the safe removal of equipment, materials and creative work from the Star Store.

I’m writing to share a few updates, and also to let you know where you can direct questions and how we will continue to provide updates and further information.

Here is what we know today:

  1. Campus Space Inventory: In collaboration with the Provost’s Office, we have completed an inventory of available spaces on campus, and are beginning the process of assigning courses, programs and studios to spaces in accordance with their unique requirements. I’d like to warmly thank my fellow Deans, who have all reached out to identify spaces that could potentially help accommodate CVPA courses and students in buildings across campus.
  2. Potential Off-Campus Space: We are also exploring whether the university can secure a modest amount of off-campus space that could help us quickly house some programs and store equipment from the Star Store on a temporary basis for up to one year, until we prepare a long-term plan for space on our main campus.

We expect to have updates on the new locations for courses and programs beginning later this week. Students registered for courses that were scheduled to be held in the Star Store will be notified as soon as a new location for the course is confirmed.

I will continue to provide frequent updates on our progress to re-house our Star Store programs, and we have also established an information page on the CVPA website where you will find updates and information. If you have questions about where your courses will be held, or about materials and belongings in the Star Store, please feel free to e-mail those to CVPA.fall23@umassd.edu, and we will be glad to respond as quickly as we are able.

Best regards,
